Equipping Western Pennsylvania Nursing Students For The Future

About Our Local Program

Portage Community Local Program serves ADN students at CCBC through mentorship, professional development, NCLEX test preparation, and scholarships. All students qualify for our program regardless of financial need. Each cohort lasts for one academic year with the opportunity to apply for the following year if they choose.

Once accepted into our program, students are matched with a medical mentor and a life mentor. These mentors walk alongside the student for the year and provide guidance on their education and future profession.

Students also attend professional development sessions and NCLEX test prep sessions throughout the course of the program. These sessions are run by experts in the nursing and medical field and are designed to prepare students for various challenges and duties ahead.

Student Spotlight

Sydney Stiger - Student Spotlight August 2021

Sydney Stiger

Meet Sydney Stiger! Sydney joined the Portage Community in the fall of 2020 when she started her second year of CCBC’s ADN program. Within minutes of meeting her, you’ll recognize her genuine desire to care for others! We loved getting to walk alongside of her as she closed out her nursing education; she exemplified determination and hard work and made use of every opportunity to learn and prepare for her career as a registered nurse.

Sydney decided she wanted to enter the medical field back in 2017, when she personally experienced the life changing impact a nurse can have. So, in 2018, Sydney enrolled in an EMT program to begin learning life saving skills. Shortly after, she enrolled at Slippery Rock to pursue a degree in Public Health, but part way into the program decided to transition into Nursing. While pursuing her ADN at the Community College of Beaver County, Sydney also balanced the demands of employment as a Nursing Assistant at West Penn Allegheny Health System, where she strengthened her medical skills as well as her passion for nursing.

We are so excited to relay that not only did Sydney successfully graduate and pass her NCLEX exam, but she is now working for UPMC Passavant in their cardio/thoracic oncology unit, supporting and caring for the needs of those battling cancer. While she’s excited to experience the many facets of nursing, her desire is to one day work in a labor and delivery unit supporting mothers and their new babies. Please join us in congratulating Sydney on her accomplishments and cheering her on as she moves forward in her career and cares for her community!
